The first time they met, it was walking into the large room Dr House had instructed them to go to, of course. Kutner was attempting to exchange pleasantries with everyone in the room, despite the confusion, and Thirteen couldn't help but give a small smile to the overly enthusiastic man. It wasn't quite clear at that point why they were all there, numbers attached to strings and hanging around their necks, everyone spread out across the expansive room, but Kutner tried to make the most of the situation. Thirteen wasn't one for socialising, and she didn't say much more than a simple, 'Hello,' to him at that time, but that was alright, because the two would share many more firsts together.

The first time they hung out, it was right after Thomas Stark died. Everyone was curious as to why Thirteen was not fired along with the others on her team, and Kutner was no exception, but he also felt the need to make her feel better. With a grin, he'd asked her to get a drink with him. She declined, but he was persistent, and really, she didn't have anything better to do, so they ended up going to the bar around the corner.

'I hope you don't mind my asking, but-'

'I do.'

'Alright. Sorry.'

Kutner never found out exactly why Thirteen was still on the team, and Amber had made quite a few comments about what a useless spy he would make, but they'd gotten just a little bit closer that night, even if all they did was drink and make small talk.

The first time they kissed, it wasn’t anything spectacular, just a tipsy touch of the lips, nothing more. Thirteen had blushed (a occurrence Kutner found to be oddly adorable) and Kutner had laughed (a sound Thirteen was loath to admit she liked hearing), and nothing more was said or done about it that night. They'd returned to the Twilight Zone marathon on TV, and that was that.

The first time Thirteen had seen Kutner unhappy was after Cole had essentially betrayed him. She didn’t like it at all.

The first time they had sex, it was an entirely sudden, slightly awkward exchange of body heat. Thirteen had been upset about the result of her Huntington's test, Kutner had been sitting on the floor eating cereal and watching Star Trek for six hours too many, and it just seemed like the thing to do. Thirteen didn't quite know how to seek out comfort, Kutner didn't know quite how to give it, and yet that is what ended up happening. The seriousness of the situation loomed over their heads, but in those few moments, all that existed was heat and skin and sweat and touch.

With each 'first', their odd friendship grew a little more, a little stranger, a little stronger. They didn't mark their relationship by them, or even remember them, for the most part, but they were there, and that was all that mattered.

Yay, Kutner/Thirteen! This is awesome, I love how you give these almost behind-the-scenes moments that marked the progress of their relationship.

Truthfully, I was expecting to see Thirteen there with him when we saw him eating his cereal, so I'm just gonna assume that your version is what happened :D.

I LOVED this fic. Kutner/Thirteen makes me really giddy for some reason. I see them becoming closer in season 5 (hopefully). But yesh, I really really really ::three hours later:: really loved this! You did a great job! I hope you write more Kutner/Thirteen fics, because there simply isn't enough.
