Summary: Spain forgets their anniversary again, but it's not like Romano cares at all about such a stupid day anyway. Hmph.
Note: For [livejournal.com profile] abarero for [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti. I am so, so sorry this is so late! I'm an awful person, but I hope you enjoy it anyway! ♥ Thanks for being so fucking awesome.

It was a normal, typical, nothing out of the ordinary (oh no, nothing at all) sort of day. The sun was shining high in the sky, its rays completely uninterrupted by clouds. A gentle breeze was blowing across the landscape, making the harsh heat of the sun a little softer.

Basically, it was a nice, normal kind of spring day in the country of Spain.

Completely.

Utterly.

Entirely.

Normal.

That was what Romano insisted, anyway. There was nothing unusual about the date. A glance at the calendar that hung in Spain's kitchen did not bring about any tingling of familiarity, nor did it cause any oddly light feelings to settle into Romano's stomach. He hadn't maybe put some sort of tiny, stupid little marking in the day's box, because there was no reason at all to do that.

He hadn't sent his and Spain's best suits to get dry cleaned.

He hadn't made reservations at Spain's favourite restaurant.

He hadn't gotten a ridiculously sappy gift, nor had he wrapped it in bright, shiny paper to the best of his abilities. There were no orange lilies to initiate the entire night that he didn't have planned.

He hadn't done a goddamn thing, because there was no reason for him to.

Of course, had he done all those things, gone through all that trouble (and that was a hypothetical, because he really hadn't), it wouldn't have mattered anyway, because while Romano was busy denying any sort of work he had done, Spain was off in his tomato fields, entirely oblivious to anything that wasn't really going on.

Romano would have to go find Spain eventually, in order to make sure things (that didn't exist) would stay on schedule, but for now, he was content to just sit in Spain's kitchen and sulk.

"Hey, Romano?"

Romano startled at the unexpected sound of Spain's voice. "What are you doing in here?"

Spain grinned and held up two suit bags. "That girl from the tintorería brought these by. Does Romano have a meeting today~?"

Romano got up and snatched his own suit from Spain. "Why would I need your suit for a meeting, stupid?"

Spain seemed to consider this for a moment, before a look of realisation crossed his face, only to dissolve into confusion seconds later. "Do I have a meeting? I don't think I do, my boss would have called to remind me..."

As always, Romano wondered why he was even surprised by Spain being a complete airhead. "Just go put your damn suit on, I'm sure you'll remember why you need to eventually."

"Aww, you're not going to tell me?" Spain pouted slightly, but Romano just stared at him, entirely unamused. "Well you're no fun." More unamused staring. "Okay okay, I'm going to put it on. You know, your grumpy face is really cute and all, but it would be even cuter if--"

"Go. Now."

"Going~." Spain rushed off, laughing as he made his way up to his room. Romano followed shortly after, partially to get dressed himself, but mostly to make sure that Spain didn't get distracted by something or other on his way up to the bedroom.

Spain wasn't the one who ended up getting distracted, though. Romano had to unbutton Spain's shirt and re-button it because the bastard couldn't manage to match the button holes up with the correct buttons. He'd had to do the same for the suit jacket, though that hadn't been quite as much of a disaster, since it only had three buttons to begin with. By the time he'd finished dressing the other man (and maybe, possibly taking a few seconds to admire Spain's behin-- that never happened), he realised he hadn't actually taken any time to dress himself.

Spain seemed to realise this as well. "Is Romano going out in just his underwear~?" he asked with a laugh.

"S-shut up, you moron! I'm getting dressed!" True to his words, he pulled on his own suit, making sure all the buttons were in place (didn't want anybody thinking Spain of all people was dressed better than he was, after all). "There, lets go."

"Go where?" Spain asked.

"You'll see." Romano grabbed Spain by the sleeve and tugged him out of the room, not wanting to stand around for hours playing twenty questions.

"Hm? Well, maybe I don't want to go. I'm tired, I think I'll just stay here." He gently pulled himself out of Romano's grasp and made to walk back towards the bedroom. "You don't mind, do you?"

A moment ticked by, and Romano stared after Spain before sputtering and lunging at the other nation. A loud thud reverberated through the house as they both fell to the floor. "You are so fucking unnecessary! Your ass is coming with me and you're going to like it!"

Spain just laughed and Romano barely kept himself from strangling the glee right out of him. "Sí, no worries, I'm coming. I just have to grab my wallet, okay?"

"Could've just said that to begin with," Romano muttered, but he let Spain go nonetheless, after they'd picked themselves up from the floor and dusted off their freshly dry cleaned suits.

They finally made it back downstairs without any further incident, and Romano thought that they might just make it out of the house on time, but then he had to go and ruin it for himself.

"Uh." He picked the bouquet of lilies up off the kitchen table on their way out and shoved them at Spain, his gaze fixated on the wall behind Spain as opposed to on the man himself. "Just keep your mouth just and don't do anything stup--"

"Flowers for me? That's so cute!" Spain pulled Romano into a hug so fast it knocked the wind out of him. "You're so sweet. I was telling America once, you know, that my Roma was so sweet and nice and cute when he wanted to be, and he didn't believe me! But you are~."

Romano's mouth twitched, but a fortuitous glance at the clock kept Spain from being on the receiving end of any bodily harm (for now). "I don't even want to know. We're leaving now."

Spain chattered, rambled, and lectured Romano on his dangerous driving the whole way to the restaurant, as always. His eyes lit up when he realised where they were, and Romano had to fend off another hug from the overly excited man.

"You're extra cute today," Spain voiced after Romano ordered an obnoxiously expensive red wine for the two of them. "What's Boss done lately to deserve this, hm?"

"Nothing," Romano dead-panned. "You're an annoying jerk, as always."

Spain's shoulders slumped in a visible pout. "You're so mean."

"And you're so stupid."

"Tell me what's so special about today?"

"No."

"Give me a clue?"

"I think I've already given you enough clues, bastard."

Spain just pouted more before brightening up. "Oh! Is it my birthday?"

Romano was interrupted from answering when the waiter returned with their wine, and the conversation was briefly put on hold while both he and Spain placed their orders. "No," he responded finally, rolling his eyes. "That was in February."

"Is it your birth-- No, I remembered that this time!" Spain grinned, momentarily proud of himself, before once again settling his features into a thoughtful pout. "It's spring, what happens in spring... Oh!"

"Yeah, oh. You forgot again, didn't you?" Not like it upset Romano or anything, pft. It was just some stupid day that didn't matter in the slightest.

"I thought our anniversary was next week," Spain added with a nervous laugh. "But I got you a present, I did! So you can't be mad, okay?"

"I can be mad if I want to be." Romano puffed his cheeks out in a pout that put Spain's to shame. "You probably lost my present like you did last year."

"Nope!" Spain was grinning again. "It's coming in the mail, so you can have it as soon as it gets here."

"I guess that's acceptable." Romano flushed when Spain proceeded to smile brightly at him in response, adoration lighting up his features even more so. "Oh stop that."

"Feliz Aniversario, Romano~."

If Romano grinned back at Spain when he muttered a soft, "Buon anniversario," it was only because he'd already started in on the wine, nothing more.

Awww, this is so adorable! Oh oblivious!Spain. Oh Romano being...Romano. It's so adorable and oddly sweet in a totally dysfunctional them kinda way. I absolutely love the narrative with Romano's denial of everything peppered throughout and the way he'd prepared everything for the day, not that he did or anything XDDD

Just- thankyousomuch! This is absolutely perfect and just the dose of Spain/Romano fluff I needed. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

DAAAWWWW >W<

GOD SPAIN. Why do you have to be my favorite country, you goofy airhead? ;-;

"Spain seemed to consider this for a moment, before a look of realisation crossed his face, only to dissolve into confusion seconds later. "Do I have a meeting?" I laughed so hard xD

And I also was laughing out loud at the fact that Spain can't button his buttons properly xDDDD

You wrote this gorgeously.
What I think I love the most though, is that Romano doesn't get mad. I think a lot of fic writers would be tempted to just have him throw a major hissy fit, and call the whole thing off, rather than just going ahead with the whole thing (to the extent to bodily pushing no less) regardless of whether Spain forgot or not.
And I like the way that you went more. Because Romano's used to it. You really get the impression that he's absolutely consigned to fate, knows exactly how to deal with it, and just gets on with it, albeit with his characteristic sulking (which I believe that he is wholly allowed in his case). I think that somehow, you did the characters more justice in this way and so, it ended up as a really good, sweet, and genuinely nice read.

Thank you for posting!

What a great read! I really enjoyed how you portrayed Spain's utter obliviousness to everything from dates to buttons xD And Romano's denial at the beginning was so cute. But I sill find it amazing that Spain didn't realize what day it was until they were actually seated at the restaurant. I think the needs to learn to read THE ATMOSPHERE too~
