I know we're talking about this over on AIM, but I want to put this here as well:
Your line "They don't need to love one another 'like that' to be in love" is so true. They are in love with each other, but in a basic sense. They are absolutely and truly 100% committed to each other. To be that committed to each other goes far beyond simply being best friends - the ARE a couple. They don't need to be romantic about it. This works perfectly fine with them, and I think is actually better than a romantic relationship. Like you said on AIM, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd fucked before "just because." I wouldn't either. But I think that's far more likely to happen than for them to make this romantic. They don't need the romantic or physical aspect of it. Because, again, this works for them.
Most people in actual romantic relationships don't even have that sort of dedication to each other. And most people would give absolutely anything to have that. I know I would. To have someone like that; to have a friendship that powerful... even if other parts of your life aren't exactly the Cheeriest Fucking Thing On Earth, that relationship would be all that you needed and all that mattered. Anything else, positive or negative, important or not, just falls by the wayside in comparison. They'll always be there for one another, no matter what. They've proven that much. I really would give fucking anything to have that, or even remotely close to that.
